Choosing orthodontic care often comes with many questions. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from patients and families considering orthodontic treatment at Chatham Orthodontics. Our goal is to help you feel confident, informed, and prepared before your visit.
Do You Charge for an Initial Visit?
No. Chatham Orthodontics offers a complimentary initial consultation. This visit allows Dr. Barbara Fodero to evaluate your smile, discuss any concerns, and determine whether orthodontic treatment is recommended, all without obligation.
At What Age Do You Start Seeing Patients?
We see patients of all ages. Children are typically evaluated for the first time around age 7, but orthodontic treatment is also common for teens and adults. It is never too early or too late to schedule an orthodontic evaluation.
Why Do You Evaluate Patients So Young?
Early evaluations help identify developing orthodontic concerns before they become more complex. While not every child needs early treatment, monitoring growth allows us to determine the ideal timing for care and guide proper jaw and tooth development when necessary.
What Is the Difference Between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?
A general dentist provides routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, and preventive services. An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed additional years of advanced training focused exclusively on correcting tooth alignment, bite issues, and jaw development.
Do You See Patients for Emergencies?
Yes. We provide care for orthodontic emergencies such as broken brackets, poking wires, or appliance issues. If you experience discomfort or damage to your orthodontic appliance, please contact our office so we can guide you on next steps.
Do I Need to Take Antibiotics Before My Appointment?
Most patients do not need antibiotics before orthodontic appointments. If you have a medical condition that requires premedication, please let us know so we can coordinate care appropriately with your physician or dentist.
Do You Take Patients Transferring from Out of Town?
Yes. We welcome patients who are transferring orthodontic treatment from another office. Dr. Fodero will review your records, evaluate your current progress, and create a plan to continue your treatment smoothly.
Can I Make All My Appointments in the Afternoon After School and Late in the Day?
We do our best to accommodate busy schedules, including after-school appointment times. However, appointment availability can vary, and some procedures may require flexibility. Our team works with families to find convenient scheduling options whenever possible.
Why Do Teeth Become Crooked After Wearing Braces or Aligners?
Teeth naturally tend to shift over time due to aging, muscle pressure, and habits. Without consistent retainer wear, teeth may move back toward their original positions. Long-term retention is key to preserving orthodontic results.
How Do Enlarged Adenoids or Allergies Affect Braces?
Enlarged adenoids or chronic allergies can contribute to mouth breathing, which may affect jaw growth and tooth positioning. Identifying and addressing these factors can support more stable orthodontic outcomes.
How Does a Tongue Thrust or Low Tongue Posture Affect Braces?
Tongue posture and swallowing patterns can place pressure on teeth, potentially affecting alignment. If a tongue thrust or low tongue posture is present, it may need to be addressed as part of orthodontic treatment to support long-term stability.
Can Braces or Orthodontic Treatment Treat or Cause TMJ Problems?
Orthodontic treatment does not typically cause TMJ issues. In some cases, improving bite alignment may help reduce strain on the jaw. Dr. Fodero carefully evaluates jaw function to ensure orthodontic care supports overall comfort and health.
